A Dutch portraitist who worked in England, George Vertue also worked as an engraver and reproduced copies of great artworks produced in England, which garnered him the title "Father of English art history." Of his own work, Vertue focused on capturing portrait likenesses of the British aristocracy, including this of Sir John Medina and others by the Earle of Surrey, King Alfred the Great, the Duke of Cumberland, and Prince William Augustus.
