Affixed to the back of the relining is an old handwritten label that reads: . . . said by Mr. Clark the former owner to be by Caroselli . . . Bought/in New York in 1846

Condition:

Glue relined. Very dark old varnish layer, difficult to interpret under UV light. An repaired horizontal C-shaped tear in the background above the crown of St. Francis's head; a small repaired hole on his upper right arm. Contours of the cross reinforced. Apparent old restoration to the shadows on the right hand and to the shadow below the saint's left eye.
