Jean-François Raffaëlli was a multifaceted artist with interest in music and acting, before becoming a painter in 1870. Without formal training in painting, he was accepted in the studio of Jean-Léon Gérôme at the École des Beaux-Arts in 1871. Of exceptional talent, he already a landscape at the Paris Salon the previous year
