The model, in plaster, was supplied by John Flaxman, Sr (1726-1795) to Josiah Wedgwood circa 1775-80 and is still in the Wedgwood Museum, Barlaston (see. D. Bindman, ed., John Flaxman, 1979, p. 50, nos. 19a and 19b). Flaxman is thought to have derived his pattern from forms made by Sigisbert-François Michel (1728 - 1811), called Sigisbert, or his younger brother Claude Michel Clodion (1738-1814), called Clodion. Sigisbert a plaster ewer of virtually identical design, along with its companion water urn, at the Académie de Saint-Luc in 1774
