Literature:

Ubrux was born in Yogyakarta and initially worked making banners after dropping out from art school. The two years he spent in Switzerland painting billboards form part of his artistic foundation The artist rose to fame when he started producing works with hand painted headlines, and wrappings of newspaper around the effaced subject. The idea of wrapping sculptures came from conversing with jamu ladies, whose profession involves wrapping clients in binder wraps. For Ubrux, the constant stream of carefully constructed language in state-censored or motive-oriented newspapers harbors an oppressive element. They occupy the mental space of the common people, edging out individual thought. Newspapers politicize everything – within Ubrux’s oeuvre, this ranges from people, to dinnerware, to cows. In other words, to be caught within the onslaught of this politicized language is to be lost within a web of overt sensationalism, where the truth is deeply obscured. Ubrux’s artistic symbolism has brought out the crux of this hypocrisy in modern society.
