inscribed, signed and dated 'From Houdon’s bust by C Calverley Sc. 1877', on edge of shoulder; dated and inscribed 'Copyright 1877 by W.S. Barlow N.Y. The bust from which I mottled this medallion has carved upon it the following inscription C. Calverley Sc. This bust is from the living face of Washington by Houdon Oct. 1785. Permission was granted to Clark Mills in 1849 by Col. Washington at Mt. Vernon to take a copy of the original bust in bronze, Clark Mills Sc., below shoulder
