James Vigeveno Galleries, Los Angeles, California (labels affixed to stretchers); Tallulah Bankhead, New York; Donald R. Seawell, bequeathed from the above, 1968. The present pair of paintings once graced the fashionable home of the prominent stage and screen actress Tallulah Bankhead (1902-1968). Born into an important Alabama political family, Miss Bankhead made her mark first on Broadway, then in London and Hollywood, originating roles in plays such as Lillian Hellman's The Little Foxes and Thornton Wilder's The Skin of Our Teeth. One of her lifelong friends was the Broadway actress Eugenia Rawls who married Donald R. Seawell, a lawyer who became increasingly involved in the theatre as a producer first in New York and then also in London. Once the couple moved to Colorado, Mr. Seawell continued this interest and in 1974 founded the Denver Center for the Performing Arts, which has become one of the largest nonprofit theatre organizations in America.
